Whenever I make a “late-Mon-inspired” dish, nobody gets to have any without a side of stories about her. Keeps a seat at the table for her always. I’m sorry you lost your friend. May her stories live until the end of time. ❤️
What a beautiful tribute. This is so well written-so much humour and insight. I thank you Jan. I have two cans of DC in my fridge. Coincidence? I don't think so. My love to you and your family.
Food is such a connector, no more so than when those we shared it with are no longer with us. Here’s to Dorothy -I think it’s time to rename that salad Jan!
I can relate to that, both me and my sister celebrate the memories of the dearly departed with their favourite dishes. Pizza and maple cookies for my mom, one of my dad's many recipes or hot sauce for him, smoked meat or spaetlze for my grandmother, and the list goes on. We always mark their birthdays and departure days with their favourite dishes, but of course we can remember them any other time as well.
Even more peculiarly, when my dad died, his favourite restaurant just disappeared, went out of business when my sister tried to go, then when my grandmother died, her favourite (and busy) buffet restaurant also went out of business, no warning, so strange, and then my mom's favourite diner vanished - we tried to go one week after she died, and the number was out of service, no trace of it to be found. Super bizarre but also very interesting.

Thank you for sharing this with me, Wendy. We do the same thing for my dad... although it is rarely the same food two years in a row. He loved to eat!

Wow! That is some super natural stuff. Or maybe supper natural. :)
In any case, I am sorry for your loss, it sounds like you two had a lot of fun together.
