CW: Body Issues
It’s June. And for a long time, I hated summer. Because summer means pool parties, and bathing suits. Summer means shorts and tank tops and bare skin. Luckily I grew up in the 00s, when it was trendy to wear black leggings under jean shorts (it was a very warm time to be a teen). Being pale meant you were cool and liked The Cure; not that you were afraid of showing skin because you weren’t thin like your friends and had been wearing a bra since grade 4!
I carried that with me well into adulthood. I have very few pictures of my younger self, because I hated the way I looked. Then my body changed. A lot. And I started to see myself differently. Suddenly I wanted to be in every photo. Instagram account? Yes please. Casual photoshoot in the grocery store? How fun! Selfie with the girls? If you insist!! #NoFilters #Don’tNeedEm #LookAtMe!
Then my body changed again. And again, in the 15 months we’ve been in lockdown.
Why am I telling you this?
Because maybe yours has too.
Because I don’t want to spend a summer wearing leggings under my jean shorts. So guess what? I bought a bikini. And I took a picture of myself in it. Regardless of my size, I’m never going to be this young or this cute again. So I’m posting it.
I’m posting it because everyone deserves to feel the sun on their skin (maybe not for too long and always wear sunscreen).
I know this is a departure from the regular @twolittlesandwiches content. You’re used to seeing me make cheesecake… Not be cheesecake. But it’s summer. And it’s been a long year. We all deserve to have fun, and I don’t want anything stopping you from doing that. So put on your best wig. Wear something that makes you feel great, make your body into an “S” shape, and do your own little photo shoot. Share ‘em or don’t. Either way. Delete the “bad” ones and blame it on lighting (I took about 20 photos to get this one… It’s fine!) One day, you’ll be glad you have them. I promise.
As a reward for your gumption, here is a recipe for the easiest ice cream you’ll ever make.
Next month we’ll go back to food puns, kitchen fails, and recipes. I promise. But this time around… It just had to be said.
Love you Jan!
