A Little Late to Dinner
This month’s newsletter hit your inbox a little later than usual.
The reason is… summer.
I’ll be honest. I’d much rather be cold than hot. My skin burns like Phyllis Diller at a roast. I’m prone to sun stroke. And I’m *very* dramatic. When you put all of these things together, Summer is no friend of mine.
Also, bugs bite me. A lot.
But the thing I like about summer is the ritual. Getting in the car with the windows down and hitting the road. And last week, I had the opportunity to do just that and it was lovely.
But not everyone has that luxury, so this month, I thought I’d bring the campfire to you. Starting with these little S’mores Cups by my favourite, Anna Olson.
These little guys are easy to bring to a bbq or park party (Is anyone gathering inside yet?) and aren’t as messy as the OG campfire treat. OR… if you’re like me, you can sit and eat them, as the air conditioning blasts on your topless body, cooling your charred flesh, because you deigned to spend 15 minutes in the sun with only a 50 SPF!!!
Option 2… Want a taste of the Kwarthas without leaving your basement apartment in Parkdale? You can try this DIY knock-off Kwartha Dairy Moose Tracks Ice Cream! The no-churn ice cream base is really easy and only uses 3 ingredients… once you’ve gotten your Moose Tracks fix, you can use the same base to customize your own flavs. So far this summer, I've done coffee, cookies ‘n’ creme, peanut butter, mint, s’mores, and strawberry-basil!
First… The fudge! The great thing about this recipe? It’s a two in one. If you don’t use all the fudge in your ice cream, you get to pound it as an extra treat!
But what if I don’t care about campfires, Jan? What if I haven’t bought into big cottage like some sort of flannel wearing canoe sheep? I get this. Maybe you’re happy just watching tv in your underwear. That is also cool!
I’ll leave you with one last recipe, just in case people are leaving their excess garden zucchinis on your porch, watching if you’ll take them as proof of life.
So I hope I’ve made up for my tardiness with some easy and delicious treats that will see you through the dog days of summer. And if you try them out, please let me know. I always love to know what you’re making.
Stay safe out there. Wear your sunscreen. And I’ll see you next month. On time!
